Definition

The pancreas is a gland in the abdomen that is is responsible for glucose metabolism

it is part of the gastrointestinal system and is characterized by its function as both an endocrine and exocrine organ, and the absence of a distinct capsule

Structurally it is  characterized by its central retroperitoneal location .

Functional characteristics include its endocrine function as a producer of insulin and its exocrine function producing enzymes that aid in the digestion of fat and protein .

Common diseases pancreatitis , and pancreatic carcinoma.

Diagnostic tools include serum amylase and lipase, ultrasound, CT scan and MRI.

Treatments  include medical,  surgical,  and minimally invasive options.
